RESUMO

Background: There is evidence that the after-school period plays an essential role in accumulating sedentary behavior (SB) among children and adolescents, as well as implementing potential interventions. However, relatively little is known regarding SB status of children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities (ID) during the after-school period. The purpose of this study was to investigate the total level and specific pattern of the after-school SB among children and adolescents with ID. Methods: The after-school SB status among 325 children and adolescents with ID was evaluated by the parent-reported Children's Leisure Activities Study Survey-Chinese edition questionnaire. Results: Parents of children and adolescents with ID reported approximately 204 min/day of after-school SB. Specifically, the longest time of the after-school period was spent performing the screen-based SB (84 mins/d). This was followed by recreational SB and educational SB (50 and 30 mins/d, respectively). The children aged 6-12 years old engaged more time in recreational SB than adolescents aged 16-18 years old (p < 0.05) during the after-school period. Further, the data indicated that 37.5% of children and adolescents with ID achieved the guideline limitation of 2-h-maximum screen-based SB during the after-school hour. Conclusion: Children and adolescents with ID spent a large portion of the after-school period in SB, particularly engaged in more time on after-school screen-based SB. Future efforts should focus on developing and implementing period-specific interventions designed to reduce after-school SB in the segment of this population.

RESUMO

Introduction: The prevalence of pediatric obesity remains high all over the world. Various exercise interventions have been applied to decrease the visceral fat in young individuals with obesity. But the evidence remains controversial on the effect of the exercise on visceral fat. Moreover, it is unclear which type of the exercise is the most effective for young individuals with overweight or obesity to reduce visceral fat. Objective: The objective of this review and meta-analysis is to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of different exercise interventions on visceral fat in young individuals with overweight or obesity. Methods: Four databases consisting of PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, and Cochrane Library were searched prior to May 2022. Fifteen studies with a total of 30 data points involving 1,134 participants were included in this meta-analysis. And the interventions were limited to 4 exercise types [i.e., aerobic exercise (AE), resistance exercise (RE), aerobic exercise combined with resistance exercise (CE), and high-intensity interval training (HIIT)]. Data Synthesis: The results showed that AE (Standardized Mean Difference = -0.32; 95% CI = -0.50 to -0.13; p = 0.0007; I2 = 37%) and HIIT (SMD = -0.59; 95% CI = -0.87 to -0.31; p < 0.0001; I2 = 0%) had a significant reduction effect on visceral fat. And the effect of HIIT seemed better than AE. However, RE (SMD = -0.58; 95% CI = -1.34 to 0.17; p = 0.13; I2 = 76%) and CE (SMD = -0.21; 95% CI = -0.81 to 0.38; p = 0.48; I2 = 63%) had a non-significant effect on visceral fat decline. Additionally, compared with the control group, exercise interventions had a significant effect on reducing visceral fat in adolescents (SMD = -0.54; 95% CI = -0.82 to -0.26; p = 0.0001; I2 = 64%) and young adults (SMD = -0.42; 95% CI = -0.69 to -0.15; p = 0.003; I2 = 0%) rather than children (SMD = -0.15; 95% CI = -0.32 to 0.02; p = 0.08; I2 = 0%). And the gender-based subgroup analysis indicated that the effectiveness of the exercise on the reduction of visceral fat was more significant in males (SMD = -1.27; 95% CI = -1.67 to -0.87; p < 0.00001; I2 = 0%) than that in females (SMD = -0.31; 95% CI = -0.48 to -0.14; p = 0.0004; I2 = 0%). Conclusion: This review and meta-analysis demonstrates that exercise interventions are efficient to decrease visceral fat in adolescents (12-18 years old) and young adults (18-24 years old). Among different exercise types, AE and HIIT are helpful for young individuals with overweight or obesity to reduce visceral fat and HIIT appears to be the most effective exercise intervention. In addition, the effect of exercise interventions on the consumption of visceral fat is more significant in males than that in females. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Limited research has looked at the physical activity (PA) among Chinese children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities. METHODS: The Children's Leisure Activities Study Survey-Chinese version was applied in evaluating PA levels among children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities. RESULTS: The data indicated that only 29.5% of children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities met the PA recommendation. Boys engaged in significantly more MVPA and had higher energy expenditure than girls during weekdays and the whole week. The general trend in PA levels demonstrated a downtrend with the growth of age of children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities. The students aged 6-12 years old performed more MVPA and had greater energy expenditure compared with those 13-15 and 16-18 years old. CONCLUSION: The level of PA among Chinese children and youths with intellectual disabilities is remarkably low, and there is a large gap compared with the PA recommendation.

RESUMO

Objective@#To understand the sedentary behavior level of children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities in Jinan City, and to provide a reference basis for developing health behavior intervention strategies.@*Methods@#By used the method of cluster random sampling, the Children s Leisure Activities Study Survey was used to investigate the sedentary behavior level of 285 children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities aged 6-18 years from 7 special education schools in Jinan City.@*Results@#The sedentary behavior time during the whole week among children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities in Jinan City was 394.46 min/d, including 378.00 min/d on weekdays(Monday to Friday) and 388.80 min/d on weekends (Saturday and Sunday), the difference was statistically significant ( Z =-2.19, P <0.05). 80.4%(229) of children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities had sedentary behavior time of more than 2 h/d. The sedentary behavior time per day during the whole week among children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities was negatively correlated with the amount of time spent in moderate vigorous physical activity among them ( r =-0.16, P <0.05).@*Conclusion@#Excessive sedentary behavior has become a growing public health concern among children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities, which warrants targeted healthy behavior intervention.

RESUMO

A novel ratiometric fluorescence strategy is developed for specific detection of folic acid (FA) by using 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid protected gold nanoclusters (AuNCs@MUA). In this design, the fluorescence color of the probe can be switched among red, pink, violet and blue by varying the concentration of FA. AuNCs@MUA possesses strong fluorescence peaking at 612 nm (R-signal) and FA exhibits blue emissive auto-fluorescence at 446 nm (B-signal), showing a large emission shift of ∼170 nm. When AuNCs@MUA approaches FA through electrostatic binding, the R-signal decreases while the B-signal increases with titration of FA. Based on the above phenomenon, a radiometric analysis platform is constructed for FA target detection, with a wide linear response range from 0 to 20 µM, and an excellent detection limit of 26 nM. This new ratiometric strategy exhibits low background, and wide signal changes in a low concentration range, which presents obvious advantages over most previous FA detections based on single-responsive fluorescence methods. Furthermore, the proposed method is successfully applied to determine FA in human serum samples.
